On Friday 6 July 2007, NSW Treasurer, the Hon Michael Costa launched the "Hamilton Wi-Fi Project" which provides FREE wireless Internet over 8 city blocks in the Newcastle suburb of Hamilton.
"Business Hamilton has installed a wireless broadband network in Beaumont Street for the benefit of local businesses, local customers, visitors and residents," said the Chairman of Business Hamilton, Mr George Yanis.
"Broadband is the current topic with all levels of Government, Business and Industry – and Business Hamilton is leading the way in Newcastle, the Hunter and indeed Australia with this innovative project," he continued.
Vice-Chairman of the committee that organised the deployment, Mr Lindsay Parker, added that the aims of the project include assisting the Hamilton business community to take advantage of the world of e-commerce, attracting a new clientèle to Hamilton and offering new innovative services including web-based services to local businesses and users.
The service is 100% free and is fully funded by local businesses as well as splash page advertising. Coverage is ubiquitous with fast hand-off and roaming throughout the network area.
The RoamAD network was supplied by Australian carrier aCure Technology Pty Ltd. aCure is well known for operating metromesh, the world's most profitable citywide Wi-Fi network located in Perth, Western Australia. aCure also operates and monitors the Hamilton network.
